The Umhlali Project

Violence Prevention Through Early Childhood Development

Early childhood development (ECD) is a crucial component of violence prevention.  Children who have access to quality ECD services are more likely to complete school and stay away from crime. For this reason, our project includes work with Walmer Township ECDs.

We are:
  • Offering assistance with registration of ECDs with the Department of Social Development
  • Co-facilitating an ECD service provider forum for all Walmer Township service providers with Early Inspirations. This forum will ensure that there is reduced service duplication.
  • Providing capacity development and training on a wide range of subjects relevant to child care including:
    • Child protection and safeguarding
    • Reading and literacy
    • Hygiene
    • Financial management
    • Fire safety
    • Nutrition
    • Substance abuse
We are currently working with over 46 ECDs in Walmer Township.
