The Umhlali Project

Substance use and abuse

There is an established link between harmful alcohol consumption and violence.  In order to make Walmer Township a safer place for children and youth, it is essential that harmful alcohol consumption practices are addressed.  In order to accomplish this, we are:
  1. Offering training and skills development on the usage of the World Health Organisation’s Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT)
  2. Working with both registered and unregistered shebeens and taverns in Walmer Township by providing access to training and skills development
  3. Improving relationships between the SAPS and taverns and shebeens in the community
  4. Developing a positive sense of responsibility amongst tavern and shebeen owners about their role in making Walmer Township a safer place
  5. Training and skills development of educators, caregivers and community members about harmful alcohol consumption
  6. Implementing awareness and education activities with children and youth about harmful alcohol consumption
  7. Integrating learning materials into the national curricula for Life Orientation on harmful alcohol consumption
